1/12th Scale and Miniature Items
Now this is my special interest area in turning. I love the little things and trying to achieve paper-thin walls without breaking the tiny spigots that must bear the immense forces of hollowing out. Small scale turning holds its own set of special challenges, requiring change in turning techniques, adaptations in work-holding, and great care in finishing. The results can be items of great beauty - delicate, perfectly formed object d'art with gossamer wings.
Soapstone is really beautiful to turn...
...until you find a quartz inclusion. They really mess up the edge of your tools. You just have to re-sharpen and keep going.
Yew wood is grossly underrated
And so easy to find.
Yellow Box Burr is a rare wood.
A natural edged bowl and a vase in YBB seen with a UK 5p piece (front) and a US quarter for scale.
A little platter.
Masir Birch - wood that shimmers in light.
Small items require a dense medium.
GPS Products do a brilliant substitute for materials such as ivory, horn and tortoiseshell. Here are some items made of these replica products.
